Serres Is Part of the World’s Smartest Hospital OYS in Finland

Newly rebuilt Oulu University Hospital in Finland.

The OYS2030 Project is an ambitious redevelopment plan to modernize the Oulu University Hospital (OYS) in Finland by 2030. This project aims to build one of the most advanced “smart hospitals” globally, combining cutting-edge medical technology and sustainable design to streamline operations, automate workflows, and improve patient care.

From the project’s construction planning stages onwards, our Serres Fluid Management system, including Serres Suction bag system and Serres Nemo surgical fluid disposal device have been seamlessly integrated into the modern facility to enhance patient care, improve healthcare safety, and support the hospital’s forerunning sustainability goals. Together, we are setting a new standard for the future of healthcare.

A Visionary Hospital Built on Sustainability

Located in Northern Finland, Oulu University Hospital (OYS) is leading the way in patient care and sustainability. Serving nearly half a million residents, the OYS2030 initiative aims to establish the world’s smartest hospital, with a forerunning emphasis on sustainability, user-centricity, and expert collaboration.

Recognized with the Ashikaga-Nikken Excellence Award for Green Hospitals by the International Hospital Federation’s IHF for its outstanding commitment to sustainability, OYS focuses on pioneering sustainability goals in the healthcare industry. This commitment includes not only optimizing resource use through smart solutions, but the ambition to significantly reduce waste and energy costs through forerunning technologies – for instance through the implementation of our Serres Nemo fluid disposal device.

We are proud to contribute our sustainable solutions to this transformative project. Our ambition is that sustainability should be entangled in everything we do from innovation, product development, manufacturing & sourcing, and sales & marketing. We have committed to, in our segment, bringing responsible and efficient workflows to healthcare facilities while still enabling the best possible care.

40 Serres Nemos Supporting OYS’s Sustainability Targets

The Serres Nemo is a device designed to safely and efficiently manage and dispose of fluid waste generated during surgeries. It is an integral part of the closed-loop Serres Suction system. With Serres Nemo, hospitals can significantly reduce operating room waste, by disposing of only emptied suction bags. This workflow not only minimizes waste but also cuts down on the carbon emissions typically associated with the disposal of full fluid bags.

The OYS2030 initiative unites the vision and experience of patients, designers, service providers, and hospital staff, to create the most efficient and reliable hospital of the future. Since 2019, Serres has been an active partner in this collaborative effort, contributing to the design and development of the hospital’s systems to ensure seamless integration of surgical suction and disposal where it’s needed most.

We are proud to contribute our solutions to this one-of-a-kind project, supporting Oulu University Hospital in its mission to set new standards for sustainability. At Serres, we are dedicated to bringing responsible workflows to healthcare providers with our reliable and sustainable surgical suction solutions.
