Serres strives to lead the way in environmental sustainability within the healthcare sector. Achieving this ambition requires a comprehensive understanding of the lifecycle impacts of our products across the entire value chain.

In collaboration with OPENCO2net, we have conducted reliable, data-driven calculations of the carbon footprints of our products; The Serres Suction system including the Serres Suction bag and the Serres Nemo designed for emptying the suction bags. Using a custom-built calculator developed on the OPENCO2.net platform, We assessed the carbon footprint of our Serres Suction bag used in hospitals, covering their entire lifecycle from production to disposal.

To ensure transparency and reliability, Serres utilizes the OPENCO2.net calculator, which is built on the ISO 14067 standard. This advanced tool efficiently evaluates the impacts of multiple products and enables comparisons of carbon footprints for suction bags of various sizes and materials. The calculator leverages OPENCO2.net’s extensive emissions database, which features over 6,000 emission factors sourced from diverse and reliable datasets.

“It’s great to support a pioneering company like Serres in calculating the carbon footprints of their products. I am particularly pleased that Serres experts have been willing to get into the details of the emission calculation and to find out the emission factors of different raw materials directly from their suppliers,” said Sari Siitonen, Founder and CEO of OPENCO2net.

“It is crucial for us to provide hospitals with transparent and trustworthy data on the carbon footprint of using Serres Suction bags and the Serres Nemo,” said Maria Lavonen, Product and Innovation Director at Serres. “Our collaboration with the expert team at OPENCO2net has been instrumental in accelerating our carbon footprint assessments and simplifying the lifecycle analysis of our products,” Lavonen added.

Reliable Data to Drive Sustainability

Operating rooms in hospitals are significant sources of waste and emissions. For Serres, producing reliable, data-driven insights is critical to helping hospitals identify the sources of their emissions, reduce waste, and adopt sustainable operational models.

“Sustainability is embedded in everything we do, particularly in our product design and manufacturing processes. The emission calculations have provided us with valuable insights to improve our performance and products, supporting hospitals in their journey toward Net Zero,” Lavonen explained. “For example, we are actively exploring new material options and methods that have the potential to significantly reduce carbon footprints in the future,” she concluded.

By focusing on reliable data and innovative solutions, Serres continues to position itself as a responsible leader in healthcare sustainability, helping hospitals meet their environmental goals while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.
